In the spirit world, Jesus was clothed with the power
of God. In the natural world, He just wore His everyday
stuff. His Father didn't seem to notice that He didn't
have "church clothes"...
The whole "Sunday Best" thing has been way overdone!
It has bred a competitive ("did you see what she was
wearing?"), exclusive ("I can't go to church, I don't
have anything good enough to wear!"), impractical ("I
dress up all week, why do I have to get dressed up for
church?") and schismatic ("I'll go when I can just be
who I really am!") environment into much of the church
world today! It's not a biblical concept unless you
embrace the old Jewish Temple laws including the knee
length, itchy-wool, underwear...
Most of Jesus' life was walked out among everyday
people, and they loved Him. He was God-come-down-to-earth
in a real-world package! He was one of them and He
looked the part!
Because He loved them, He had regular encounters with
the "Sunday Best" crowd... but He made a point of going
behind the façade, no matter how well merchandised, to
speak about the real issues of heart: pride, self
exaltation and separation...
Now, we have no brief against dressing up for church on
Sundays... especially if someone really likes to...
but there is plenty of room here for people who would
like to just slip into a pair of jeans and loafers
when it comes time to go to "church."
Sunday should be the best day of the week... the first
day of new opportunity... a great day to gather
together to worship the Lord and listen to His response
to us…we just don't want you to think you have to dress
up in your Sunday Best to come! You don't even have to
wear socks!
